Malé – Supreme Court Judge Hussein Shaheed has been appointed as the Supreme Court’s representative on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the body responsible for overseeing the judiciary in the Maldives.

Shaheed’s appointment comes shortly after he was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on the 19th of this month. His selection follows the resignation of Judge Husnu Suood, who was among three Supreme Court judges suspended due to ongoing investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Supreme Court Judges’ Council made the decision to appoint Shaheed to the JSC, filling the vacancy left by Suood. The JSC, which is tasked with regulating the judiciary—including appointing, dismissing, and investigating judges—currently comprises nine members.

Judge Shaheed brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the Chief Judge of the High Court and as a Judge of the Criminal Court. He holds a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Science and Sharia Policy, along with an LLB in Jurisprudence and Law.

His appointment is expected to play a crucial role in shaping judicial oversight and reforms within the Maldivian legal system.
