Muraidhoo, Maldives – President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has firmly rejected accusations that his recent pledges during island tours are made impulsively, asserting that all commitments are grounded in careful planning and consultation. His remarks came during a public rally in HA. Muraidhoo on Tuesday, the first stop of his ongoing tour of HA. Atoll, where he emphasized transparency and accountability in governance.

The criticism arose after President Muizzu was seen making rapid-fire pledges in response to handwritten notes passed to him by children during recent visits to Maldivian atolls. Opponents accused him of acting on a whim without foresight or fiscal planning. Addressing these claims head-on, Muizzu stated, “Some allege that we make promises without planning or budgets. That is not the case. I have always been transparent about government affairs.”

Highlighting his administration’s structured approach, the President referenced a compiled book of his campaign pledges, which he claimed outlines clear strategies for implementation. “I explain how we will fulfill requests—whether in meetings or through official documents,” he said, dismissing claims of haphazard decision-making.

Muizzu also addressed delays in project execution during his first year in office, attributing slower progress to economic constraints and insufficient budget allocations. However, he vowed to accelerate development in 2024, stating, “This year, projects will roll out swiftly.”

During the Muraidhoo visit, the President oversaw the foundation-laying ceremony for a new police station and council secretariat building. He also witnessed the signing of an agreement between the Muraidhoo Council and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to establish an ATM center on the island—a move aimed at improving financial access for residents.

The tour underscores Muizzu’s strategy of engaging directly with citizens to identify local needs, a practice he defended as vital to equitable development. “The purpose of these visits is to listen and act,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to delivering on promises “without excuses.”

Critics, however, remain skeptical, calling for greater scrutiny of funding sources and timelines for pledged projects. As Muizzu continues his atoll tour, all eyes will be on whether his assurances translate into tangible outcomes for island communities.
