Recent satellite imagery analyzed by a Japanese think tank has revealed significant expansions to simulated Taiwanese government buildings at a Chinese military training base in Inner Mongolia. The findings indicate Beijing has nearly tripled the size of its mock presidential office training area since 2020, suggesting intensified preparation for potential cross-strait conflict scenarios.

The upgraded facilities now include detailed replicas of Taiwan’s foreign and defense ministry buildings, according to the report from Japan’s Sankei Shimbun newspaper. Satellite photos from July 2022 captured People’s Liberation Army forces establishing roadblocks around the simulated government compound before deploying armored vehicles into the area.

Additional imagery from August 2022 showed brigade-sized units conducting realistic urban combat exercises against simulated defenders of the presidential palace. Researchers note these sophisticated training operations appear to be ongoing, reflecting what analyst Maki Nakagawa described as “combat-oriented training” following “rapid renovations” at the Zhurihe training base.

The military buildup coincides with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent National Day address, where he issued stern warnings against Taiwanese independence movements. The expanded training facilities and heightened military exercises underscore Beijing’s increasingly systematic approach to preparing for potential Taiwan contingency operations.
