President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that a special bill for the enforcement of death sentences will be submitted to the Parliament during its current session. Speaking to journalists at the President’s Office, he emphasized the government’s stance on this critical issue.

President Muizzu stated that withholding the death penalty from individuals who have completed all stages of judicial review is not within the discretion of the highest leader of a nation that is “one hundred percent Islamic.” He further articulated the government’s belief that the implementation of capital punishment must be streamlined and guaranteed within the existing legal framework.

He affirmed that once the Parliament passes this bill, and it is subsequently ratified, his administration will proceed with the enforcement of death sentences for all individuals whose judicial processes have been fully completed.

The President underscored his view that this measure is essential for establishing justice and social equity in the Maldives, aligning with its identity as an Islamic nation.
