Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three-day visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, starting November 21 to participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. This marks the fourth consecutive G20 meeting hosted in the Global South, highlighting the increasing influence of emerging economies in global governance.

During the summit from November 21-23, PM Modi will present India’s perspectives across the G20 agenda and is scheduled to speak in all three main sessions. These include discussions on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, building global resilience through climate action and disaster management, and shaping a fair future through critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence.

The Prime Minister will also engage in bilateral meetings with world leaders and participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by South Africa.

The summit faces notable absence from US leadership, with former President Donald Trump announcing a boycott over human rights concerns in South Africa. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed he would not attend. However, South African High Commissioner to India Anil Sooklal expressed confidence in the summit’s success, stating the G20 has become “too big to fail” and no longer depends on any single nation.

Hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa at Johannesburg’s Nasrec Expo Centre, the G20 brings together nations representing 85% of global GDP, 75% of world trade, and two-thirds of the global population, including the European Union and African Union as regional members.
