Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III,’ Cyprus’ highest civilian award, during his historic visit to the island nation. He graciously dedicated the accolade to the enduring friendship between India and Cyprus.

“Humbled to receive this prestigious honor. It belongs to the strong bond between our nations,” PM Modi shared on social media platform X.

The Indian leader received an official welcome from Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. Following ceremonial formalities, the two heads of state engaged in productive bilateral talks, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus.

PM Modi’s arrival on Sunday afternoon (local time) kicked off his three-nation tour, which includes stops in Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. President Christodoulides personally welcomed him at Larnaca International Airport, followed by a warm reception from the Indian community in Limassol.

The visit included a high-profile CEO roundtable, where business leaders from both countries explored opportunities to enhance economic collaboration, particularly in innovation, energy, and technology sectors. “Strengthening our economic partnership! President Christodoulides and I engaged with top CEOs to boost India-Cyprus commercial ties,” PM Modi tweeted, highlighting India’s decade-long reform progress.

The Cyprus Presidency affirmed the growing partnership, stating: “Cyprus and India are ushering in a new chapter of strategic cooperation, sending a powerful message of mutual prosperity.”

Before departing, PM Modi emphasized the visit’s significance: “Cyprus remains a valued friend and key partner in the Mediterranean and EU. This visit allows us to deepen our historical connections while expanding collaboration in trade, investment, security, technology, and cultural exchanges.”
