Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday, December 1, 2025, reaffirming India’s commitment to assist Sri Lanka as it recovers from the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah. In a message posted on X, Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life and widespread damage, emphasizing that India stands as a “close and trusted friend” during this challenging time.

Modi stated that India will continue to provide all necessary support through Operation Sagar Bandhu, an initiative launched to aid Sri Lanka in relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts. President Dissanayake thanked India for its humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support on behalf of the Sri Lankan people.

Following Sri Lanka’s request for international aid, India deployed INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, and MI-17 helicopters to deliver relief supplies and assist in rescue operations. According to a government statement, Operation Sagar Bandhu has successfully rescued nationals from multiple countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, dispatched on November 29, continue to conduct search and rescue missions in severely affected areas of Sri Lanka. India has already provided 53 tonnes of relief materials to support the island nation’s recovery efforts.
