Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar has highlighted a growing difficulty in recruiting administrative staff for local council offices across the Maldives. The Minister stated that this issue is particularly prevalent in smaller island communities that benefit from tourism and other economic opportunities.

The shortage of administrative personnel has led to operational challenges, exemplified by the recent closure of the Vaavu Atoll Rakeedhoo Council. All staff members at the V. Rakeedhoo Council reportedly resigned, prompting local residents to shut down the council office.

In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) today, Minister Shareef acknowledged the escalating problem of councils struggling to find administrative employees. He confirmed that his ministry is collaborating with relevant institutions to find a resolution to this staffing crisis.

Infrastructure Development for Councils

Despite the current staffing challenges, efforts are underway to enhance the physical infrastructure of local councils to facilitate decentralised service delivery. The Local Government Ministry has commenced practical work on constructing 55 council administration buildings. This initiative aims to improve the operational environment for councils nationwide.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during his presidential address this year, affirmed that upon completion, these 55 new council buildings would be fully equipped with all necessary facilities for providing public services. He further stated that the projects for these 55 council offices are expected to conclude within the current year, enabling them to become fully operational.

In addition to these projects, six council offices have already been completed under the government’s Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP). Furthermore, a feasibility study for another 50 council offices, to be constructed with grant aid from the Chinese government, has been finalised. Administrative procedures, including land acquisition for these prospective offices, are currently in progress.
