Maafushi Prison has officially commenced the use of baggage screening technology to bolster security measures and prevent the entry of contraband into the facility.

The service was inaugurated by the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, during a special ceremony held at the prison. This initiative marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to modernize surveillance within the correctional system.

According to the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), the new screening equipment was donated by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The technology will be utilized to scan belongings brought by newly admitted inmates, items delivered by families, and personal effects carried by individuals attending family and private visitations.

Staff training for the operation of the screening machine was facilitated by experts from the Maldives Customs Service and MACL. The implementation of this technology aims to address the persistent challenge of smuggling prohibited items, including mobile phones and narcotics, into the prison environment.
