The Maldives Customs Service has intercepted an Indian national attempting to smuggle two kilograms of cannabis into the country through Velana International Airport (VIA). The seizure occurred last Saturday following a routine inspection of the passenger’s luggage.
According to authorities, the individual arrived in the Maldives from India. Customs officers conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s belongings after observing suspicious behavior. The search led to the discovery of the illicit substances, which were subsequently confirmed to be cannabis.
While the Maldives Customs Service confirmed the nationality of the suspect, his identity has not yet been publicly disclosed. This incident comes amid a notable surge in drug trafficking attempts via postal services and air travel routes in recent weeks. Authorities have intensified surveillance at all points of entry to curb the inflow of narcotics.
