Maldives Customs Service has intercepted an air freight shipment containing nearly four kilograms of cannabis at Velana International Airport (VIA).

According to authorities, the seizure occurred last Friday during a routine inspection of suspicious cargo. Upon further examination of the air freight consignment, officers discovered 3.8 kilograms of cannabis concealed within the shipment.

While the illicit substances have been confiscated, Customs officials have not yet disclosed information regarding the country of origin or the identities of the intended recipients. Additionally, no arrests have been confirmed in connection with this specific case at this time.

This incident follows a recent surge in narcotics trafficking attempts intercepted by Maldivian authorities. Earlier this month, Customs officials seized more than three kilograms of cannabis arriving via the postal service, highlighting an increasing trend in smuggling attempts through air routes.
