India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested its new Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120), marking a significant leap in the nation’s military capabilities. The weapon, which hit targets at a distance of 120 kilometers with pinpoint accuracy, is a fully indigenous system designed to enhance the Indian Army’s long-range strike power. Crucially, it can be launched from existing Pinaka launchers, offering a cost-effective upgrade to current artillery units.
The LRGR-120 utilizes an advanced Inertial Navigation System (INS) with mid-course updates and terminal guidance for exceptional precision. Capable of firing salvos of up to eight rockets, this system is engineered for standoff attacks against high-value targets like enemy command posts, artillery positions, and supply hubs. It places India among the top global players in long-range guided fires, competing with systems like the American HIMARS, Turkish TRG-300 Tiger, and Ukraine’s Vikha-M. The system’s appeal is underscored by France’s expressed interest in a potential purchase.
This development represents a profound shift in Indian military doctrine. Earlier Pinaka variants were designed for area saturation—halting large enemy troop movements with volume of fire. The LRGR-120, however, enables precision strikes deep behind enemy lines, moving the focus from overwhelming force to surgical, long-range engagement. This doctrinal evolution is informed by modern conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and India’s own experiences, highlighting the critical importance of precision and standoff capability.
Integral to its effectiveness, the LRGR-120 operates within a networked battle system. Drones and forward observers provide real-time targeting data and instant battle damage assessment, feeding information directly into the rocket’s guidance for unmatched accuracy over vast distances.
