The Indian Army has embarked on an innovative partnership with a private sector company to create low-cost anti-drone drones capable of countering enemy drone swarms and loitering munitions. According to reports from the Indian Defence Research Wing (idrw.org), this cutting-edge initiative is already in progress, with field trials expected soon. Each anti-drone unit is designed to cost under $500 and will carry a small explosive payload that detonates when approaching a target within range.

These drones are built for swarm operations, eliminating the need for individual control, and can be deployed from various platforms to intercept incoming threats. This budget-friendly solution aims to significantly lower the cost of neutralizing expensive loitering munitions, which typically range from $20,000 to $350,000 per unit, while strengthening India’s aerial defense against the growing threat of drone warfare.

The development underscores the Indian Army’s awareness of modern combat dynamics, where adversaries increasingly use drone swarms to overpower conventional air defenses. Recent conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and India’s Operation Sindoor in 2025, have demonstrated the effectiveness of swarm drones. Pakistan’s deployment of hundreds of Turkish-made drones during Operation Bunyaan al-Marsoos further emphasized the urgent need for an affordable, scalable countermeasure. The new system will autonomously track and neutralize threats using swarm intelligence to counter coordinated enemy drone tactics.
