New Delhi [India], August 15 (ANI) — In a historic announcement during Independence Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that India has achieved its ambitious 50% clean energy target five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. Speaking from the Red Fort, PM Modi highlighted this milestone as a testament to India’s commitment to sustainability and self-reliance in the energy sector.

“When the world grapples with global warming, India has not only met but exceeded its clean energy goals,” said PM Modi. “Our target was 50% by 2030, but the determination of our people has brought us to this achievement in 2025. This reflects our responsibility towards nature and the world.”

India’s clean energy journey gained momentum after its “Panchamrit” pledge at COP26 in 2021, which included targets like 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, 50% renewable energy usage, and a 1 billion tonne reduction in emissions by 2030. The nation also aims for net-zero emissions by 2070.

Recent data shows India’s renewable energy capacity has surged to 234.24 GW, with solar power leading at 116.24 GW—a dramatic rise from just 2.82 GW in 2014. Wind energy follows with 51.67 GW, while hydro and biopower contribute significantly as well. India now ranks among the top four globally in renewable energy capacity.

Key government initiatives like the PM-Surya Ghar scheme, with a Rs 75,021 crore investment, have brought solar power to over 17 lakh households. The PM-KUSUM program has replaced diesel pumps with solar alternatives, cutting 6.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Looking ahead, India is expanding into green hydrogen, offshore wind, and nuclear energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for 5 million metric tonnes of production by 2030, while nuclear capacity is set to grow tenfold by 2047.

“India’s clean energy success is a model for the world,” the government stated. “From energy dependence to leadership, we are proving that growth and sustainability can go hand in hand.” With its 2030 goals within reach, India is poised to play a pivotal role in the global fight against climate change.
