External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated two new Indian consulates in Russia’s key cities of Yekaterinburg and Kazan during a strategic visit preceding President Vladimir Putin’s anticipated trip to India. The diplomatic expansion marks a significant milestone in India-Russia relations, with Jaishankar emphasizing how these new establishments will enhance trade, tourism, and collaboration across economic, scientific, technological, academic, and cultural domains.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko and India’s Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar. Jaishankar described the occasion as “a very important day in the diplomatic history of India in the Russian Federation,” noting the months of dedicated effort behind establishing these consulates and acknowledging strong support from the Russian government.

Yekaterinburg, often termed Russia’s third capital due to its industrial significance, serves as a gateway to Siberia and specializes in heavy engineering, defense manufacturing, metallurgy, and nuclear fuel. The new consulate there is expected to drive technological and scientific partnerships between Indian and Russian industries.

Kazan, a multicultural hub that recently hosted the 2024 BRICS summit attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strengthens Russia’s connections with Asia. The consulate will foster people-to-people ties through cultural exchanges and participation in India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation program, while leveraging Kazan’s strengths in oil refining, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals.

Jaishankar expressed confidence that these consulates will not only expand India’s diplomatic presence but also catalyze progress toward the bilateral trade target of USD 100 billion by 2030. This goal was set during July 2024 agreements that included developing payment mechanisms using national currencies and signing nine cooperation pacts during Modi’s first visit to Russia since the Ukraine conflict began.

The minister also highlighted the substantial Indian community in Russia, including over 30,000 students, who will benefit from enhanced consular services and strengthened cross-border engagement.
