External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar held a high-level meeting with Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on [Day], as the two nations explored ways to deepen cooperation in trade, defense, and development partnerships.

The discussions focused on enhancing economic engagement, with India being one of Tanzania’s top trading partners. Bilateral trade between the two countries currently stands at over $6.5 billion, driven by Indian investments in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and energy.

“Our partnership with Tanzania is rooted in shared development goals and mutual respect,” Jaishankar said after the meeting. He highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Tanzania’s infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives, including through lines of credit and skill development programs.

Prime Minister Majaliwa acknowledged India’s role in Tanzania’s socio-economic growth and expressed interest in expanding collaboration in digital innovation, healthcare, and maritime security. The two leaders also reviewed progress on ongoing projects, including India-assisted water supply schemes and railway upgrades.

Defense and security cooperation featured prominently in the talks, with both sides agreeing to intensify counter-terrorism and maritime partnership efforts. Tanzania is a key strategic partner for India in the western Indian Ocean region.

The meeting comes ahead of a planned visit by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to India later this year, which is expected to further solidify bilateral relations.
