President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that studies are currently underway to allocate a specific percentage of seats in the People’s Majlis (Parliament) for youth under the age of 30. The President made this statement during a press conference held today at the President’s Office, emphasizing the necessity of significant reforms to the governance system and the constitution.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, President Muizzu noted that a referendum to hold both presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day is among the pivotal initiatives. Furthermore, he revealed plans to propose constitutional amendments that would prevent the continuous increase in the number of Majlis members. These amendments also include provisions to ensure a certain percentage of members are under 30 years old, alongside allocating a specific number of seats for women.

“Currently, local councils have a designated number of seats for women, but this is not the case for Members of Parliament. We are working to implement this,” President Muizzu explained, drawing a parallel to existing gender quotas at the local governance level. He also added that the government is actively researching the transition to a preferential voting system for presidential elections, which would facilitate a single-round election process.
