The Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have launched a search and rescue operation for two foreign nationals following the capsizing of the landing craft ‘LCVeen’ near K. Gaafaru.

According to official reports, the incident was brought to the attention of the police at approximately 08:48 AM today. The vessel, which departed from the industrial island of Thilafushi, was carrying a total of ten individuals at the time of the accident, including two Maldivians and eight expatriate workers. While eight people have been accounted for, two foreigners remain missing.

The MNDF Male’ Area Command Coastguard Second Squadron is currently spearheading the search efforts in the region. Authorities have confirmed that the vessel is presently grounded on the Gaafaru reef.

This incident occurs amid a period of severe weather across the Maldives. The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued warnings of exceptionally rough seas and wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Relevant authorities continue to urge the public to avoid non-essential sea travel and to exercise extreme caution if travel is mandatory.
