The Maldives Police Service has apprehended two individuals suspected of leading a major drug trafficking network following a targeted operation that yielded over 17 kilograms of illicit substances. The arrests, which took place on September 2, 2026, are part of a wide-scale strategic initiative launched in July to disrupt drug importation and trafficking across the country.

The joint operation was conducted by the Upper South Police Division, Gaafu Alif Atoll Police, Counter Narcotics Intelligence, and the Drug Enforcement Department. Acting on intelligence and a court-authorized warrant, authorities searched two private residences in Gaafu Alif Maamendhoo, leading to the discovery of approximately 17.7 kilograms of suspected narcotics.

Police have identified the suspects as 29-year-old Azuhadh Naseem and 29-year-old Rishfan Ramiz, both residents of Maamendhoo. According to law enforcement officials, both men are believed to hold senior leadership positions within the criminal network. Upon being presented to the court, both individuals were remanded in custody for a period of five days to facilitate further investigation.

Authorities confirmed that additional searches are being conducted at various locations as part of the ongoing probe. The case is currently being investigated by the Upper South Police and the Drug Enforcement Department to fully dismantle the network’s operations.
