Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has officially endorsed Abdulla Sodiq, the former Mayor of Addu City, to contest the vacant Hithadhoo North constituency seat in the People’s Majlis.

The parliamentary seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling yesterday, which disqualified sitting Member of Parliament Mohamed Sinan due to an outstanding judgment debt. As the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) prepares for the upcoming by-election, Sodiq, widely known as "Sobe," has expressed his intent to run for the party’s ticket.

In a post on the social media platform X, President Solih praised Sodiq’s long-standing dedication to the MDP’s reformist agenda and democratic principles. Solih described the former Mayor as a "valuable son of Addu" who has provided significant service to the Hithadhoo community throughout his career.

Abdulla Sodiq served as the Mayor of Addu City until 2020. Although he faced a setback in the MDP primary for the 2021 mayoral election, he has remained an influential figure within the party’s leadership and the Addu region.
