The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has officially signed agreements with ten additional island councils to establish specialized plant nurseries. This development is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ambitious national pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives during his term.

Under this second phase of the project, the government provides financial and technical assistance to local councils to facilitate the construction of dedicated nursery facilities. The islands included in this latest round of agreements are Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram, Alif Dhaalu Dhidhdhoo, Faafu Dharanboodhoo, Dhaalu Meedhoo, Laamu Hithadhoo, Laamu Fonadhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Seenu Meedhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo, and Kaafu Himmafushi.

The five-million tree planting initiative was inaugurated by President Muizzu on World Environment Day last year. The program is designed to protect the Maldives’ delicate ecosystem, revive endangered plant species, and significantly enhance the green cover of the archipelago.

According to the Ministry, approximately two million trees have been planted across the nation to date, with 600,000 trees planted in the current year alone. The government has expressed full confidence in meeting its target of planting one million trees before the end of the year, as outlined in the Presidential Address.
