Dr. Ahmed Riyaz has been officially appointed as the Chief Statistician of the Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS). The appointment, which became effective on August 23, 2026, was formally announced by the Bureau earlier today.

In accordance with the Maldives Statistics Act, the Chief Statistician is responsible for planning and managing the daily operations of the MBS. While Dr. Riyaz will lead the administrative and technical functions of the agency, the Bureau will continue to operate under the strategic guidance and advice of the Minister of Finance.

Furthermore, the legal accountability for the MBS before the People’s Majlis remains with the Minister of Finance. This governance structure is designed to fulfill the primary objectives of the Statistics Act: strengthening the national data collection system and ensuring the transparent and reliable dissemination of economic, social, and environmental statistics.
