The Maldives Police Service has clarified that the recent salary adjustments for its officers were implemented according to previously established regulations, refuting claims of political motivation.

Public criticism had emerged following the increment’s implementation on the first of the month, with some suggesting the timing was strategically aligned with the upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled for this Saturday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan explained that the adjustment marks the two-year anniversary of the service’s transition to the national Pay Framework. Under this framework, officers are eligible to move to the second tier of their position allowance upon completing two years of service.

Shifan further specified that the allowance is not universal but merit-based. Eligibility is restricted to officers who have maintained a specific rank and grade for two years and achieved an average performance appraisal score of 75% or higher for two consecutive years.
