Malé, Maldives – A 31-year-old man, Hussain Areesh from Banafusaage, Fuvahmulah, was arrested today in connection with an assault that occurred on the night of February 4th near the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). According to the police, Areesh was apprehended after being stopped from entering Malaysia and was brought back to the Maldives on a flight via Velana International Airport.

Police reported that the attack took place when two individuals on a motorcycle assaulted a victim, with the person sitting at the back of the bike hitting the victim on the head with an iron rod. Despite a police officer being present near IGMH at the time, the suspects managed to flee the scene. Authorities also revealed that the attackers’ motorcycle failed to start during their attempt to escape, forcing them to flee on foot.

Following a public release of Areesh’s photo and profile, authorities disclosed that he has a troubling criminal history, with a total of 28 criminal records. These include 15 incidents of assault, six drug-related offenses, three instances of property damage, and two records of carrying sharp weapons. Areesh is reportedly a prominent figure in a gang based in Maafannu, known for committing violent and dangerous crimes.

The police are continuing their investigation into the assault, and Areesh is expected to face charges related to the February 4th attack.
