The Thimarafushi Magistrate Court has imposed a fine of MVR 28,800 on an individual found guilty of threatening a police officer while on duty.

The convict, identified as Mohamed Humaam Abubakuru of Nishaan, N. Miladhoo, issued the threat during a football match held in Th. Thimarafushi. According to court proceedings, Humaam threatened to physically assault an officer who was providing security for the event, specifically vowing to “break the officer’s mouth” as tensions rose during the match.

Although the defendant denied the allegations during the trial, the court found sufficient evidence to prove the charge. Under standard sentencing guidelines, the offense originally carried a prison sentence of four months and 24 days.

However, the presiding judge opted for a financial penalty after considering Humaam’s clean criminal record and his request for a more lenient sentence. The court has ordered Humaam to settle the MVR 28,800 fine with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within a period of six months.
