The Maldivian government has announced plans to recruit 456 employees for newly established Public Works Units across various islands. This initiative, aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and services, was unveiled by Local Government Minister Adam Shareef during a press conference held today, March 24, 2026, at the President’s Office.

Minister Shareef disclosed the list of 19 islands where these new units will be established. These include Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo, Shaviyani Funadhoo, Shaviyani Milandhoo, Noonu Manadhoo, Raa Maakurathu, Baa Eydhafushi, Lhaviyani Naifaru, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, Alif Alif Rasdhoo, Alif Dhaalu Mahibadhoo, Alif Dhaalu Maamigili, Vaavu Felidhoo, Meemu Muli, Faafu Nilandhoo, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Thaa Veymandoo, Thaa Vilifushi, Laamu Gan, and Gaafu Alifu Villingili.

In addition to the 456 positions for the island units, the Minister also stated that 60 employees would be recruited for four mobile units. However, it was noted that the Ministry of Finance has currently approved only 141 of these proposed positions.

The establishment of these Public Works Units across 19 atolls, along with the acquisition of essential machinery and equipment for the 19 regional units and 4 mobile units, is projected to incur an expenditure of $9.1 million, Minister Shareef added.
