The High Court of the Maldives has officially registered and is preparing to hear an election dispute filed by Suha Ibrahim, the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate for the Meedhoo Island Council presidency. The legal challenge follows a highly contested outcome in the recent local council elections where the seat was decided by a narrow one-vote margin.

Provisional results initially placed Ibrahim in the lead with 393 votes, while her opponent, Mohamed Shahid of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), trailed with 392 votes. However, a dispute emerged concerning a ballot box located in Laamu Fonadhoo, where it was alleged that an individual ineligible to vote had cast a ballot. Both candidates subsequently requested a review of the box.

Following an investigation, the Elections Commission (EC) Complaints Bureau unanimously decided to invalidate the disputed vote and deduct it from the total count. This adjustment shifted the final standing, with the official results declaring Shahid the winner with 392 votes, leaving Ibrahim with 391 votes.

Constitutional Article 172 guarantees the right of every citizen to challenge election-related grievances in court. Under the General Elections Act, the High Court holds the primary jurisdiction to adjudicate such matters, provided they are filed within 14 days of the announcement of official results.
