Fulhadhoo Council Implements Fines for Indecent Tourist Attire

FULHADHOO, Baa Atoll – The Fulhadhoo Council has announced the implementation of a MVR 750 fine for tourists found dressed indecently in public areas of the island. The new regulation, addressing ongoing complaints regarding inappropriate attire, became effective today.

In a statement released today, the council confirmed that the decision to penalise tourists for indecency in public places was approved during a council meeting. The council highlighted that it had previously received numerous complaints regarding tourists’ attire and had undertaken efforts to resolve the issue. Fulhadhoo is recognised as a destination for local tourism.

Broader Context of Tourist Attire Regulations

The issue of tourists dressing scantily in public areas has been a recurring concern in local island communities. In August, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed similar complaints during a meeting with residents of Ukulhas in Alifu Alifu Atoll. He noted that complaints had been received regarding tourists wearing bikinis on general public beaches, in restaurants, and on streets, outside of designated ‘bikini beaches’.

While some islands feature specific ‘bikini beaches’ for tourists, instances of swimwear being used in common public beach areas and other non-designated zones have been observed, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of local dress codes.
