Aminath Shauna, who served as the Environment Minister in the previous government, has been summoned and questioned by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Details of the Interrogation

Ms Shauna stated on X (formerly Twitter) that her appearance before the ACC was related to advice provided by the Economic Council during the former administration. She affirmed that all actions undertaken during her tenure as minister were conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the regulations of the Maldives.

Ms Shauna did not disclose any further details regarding the specifics of the case.

Background

Ms Shauna was appointed as the Environment Minister in 2021 by the previous government. Prior to this ministerial role, she served as the Policy Secretary at the President’s Office.

Ongoing Anti-Corruption Investigations

The current government is actively pursuing investigations into alleged corruption cases involving senior officials from the preceding administration.

In October, former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail was summoned by the ACC in connection with alleged undue compensation paid to Swift Engineering company. Additionally, in September, Ahmed Saeed, who held the position of Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation under the previous government, was sentenced to four years in prison after corruption charges against him were proven.
