Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, stated today that the relocation of Malé’s commercial port operations to Thilafushi will provide a significant solution to the heavy traffic congestion currently facing the capital city.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Saeed highlighted that the primary challenge in importing goods via sea is the extreme space constraints at the existing Malé Commercial Harbor. To address this issue permanently, the government is accelerating efforts to relocate port activities to Thilafushi by November next year.

The Minister detailed that the new International Port being developed in Thilafushi will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including modern warehouses, cold storage units, and specialized areas for dry goods storage. This infrastructure is designed to streamline logistics and improve efficiency.

According to the government’s timeline, all port operations are expected to transition to Thilafushi by 2027. Minister Saeed noted that upon the project’s full completion by the end of 2028, the capital will experience substantial relief from the urban congestion caused by current port-related activities.
