The Government of the Maldives has announced that the foundation stone for the new international commercial port at Thilafushi will be laid on July 6, 2026. This marks the commencement of the physical work to relocate the current Malé Commercial Port to the industrial island.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed stated that the ambitious project, initiated under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, is slated for completion by November 2027. Once operational, all port services will transition to the Thilafushi facility.

Minister Saeed highlighted that the existing Malé Commercial Port was designed nearly four decades ago and lacks the modern infrastructure required for current demands. He noted that while air transport has seen significant advancement, maritime infrastructure has lagged behind, necessitating this strategic move to align with international standards.

While the new port is under construction, the government is implementing interim measures to alleviate congestion at the current Malé port. These efforts include phased operational adjustments to streamline cargo handling. Furthermore, the Minister detailed expansion plans for regional ports in Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City, including land reclamation, dredging, and the establishment of duty-free storage facilities to bolster local commerce.
