A 42-year-old man has been arrested and remanded in custody following an attempt to steal cables from a mechanical parking facility in Hulhumale. The suspect has been identified as Ahmed Hussain Manik, a resident of R. Inguraidhoo.
According to the Criminal Court’s remand order issued today, the suspect was apprehended after the Maldives Police Service received reports of cables being severed and stolen at the site. Upon reviewing surveillance footage, officers discovered the individual hiding in a nearby vacant lot.
The court has ordered the suspect to be held in pre-trial detention for 15 days. While the defendant denied the allegations during the hearing, the presiding judge noted that the police had submitted sufficient evidence to establish a reasonable suspicion against him.
This is not the suspect’s first encounter with the law. Records indicate he was previously arrested in March for attempting to steal copper strips from the terrace of a flat in Hulhumale. Previous court documents also noted the individual’s history of substance abuse, specifically heroin use.
