President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially conceded defeat following the 2026 Local Council Elections and referendum, pledging to realign the government’s trajectory in accordance with public sentiment. In a statement released on social media platform X, the President congratulated the winning candidates and assured the nation that his administration would implement necessary reforms.

The ruling party faced a significant blow as the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured majorities in all five major cities. The MDP successfully defended mayoral seats and council majorities in Male’, Addu, Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi, and Thinadhoo, signaling a strong performance in urban centers.

In addition to the local council results, the government’s proposal to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections was overwhelmingly rejected by the public. Preliminary figures show that 70.1% of voters voted against the change, with only 29.9% in favor. This referendum was a key part of the government’s legislative agenda.

According to the Elections Commission, voter turnout was approximately 63% by 4:00 PM, with total participation expected to approach 70% once final tallies are completed. President Muizzu emphasized that the government would respect the pulse of the people and work toward improving the state’s governance system.
