Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has officially announced a tender seeking contractors to develop modern administrative buildings and essential infrastructure at the new Thilafushi commercial port. This move marks a significant phase in the government’s strategic plan to relocate international shipping operations from the capital.

According to the announcement, the scope of work includes the construction of operational facilities, administrative offices, and specialized cargo handling zones. The project will feature state-of-the-art container and multi-purpose terminals, alongside cold storage units and bonded warehouses designed to enhance the Maldives’ logistics capacity. Interested private firms and joint ventures are invited to submit their proposals by 2:00 PM on September 10.

The Thilafushi Port project is a cornerstone of the current administration’s economic agenda. China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) serves as the primary contractor, developing a 1,000-meter international quay wall and a 2,000-meter domestic terminal. Furthermore, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was recently tasked with a specific portion of the project, including a 100-meter domestic quay wall and associated pavement works.

Relocating the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi is expected to provide a permanent solution to the long-standing congestion and space constraints in the capital. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has provided assurances that the new, high-tech port facility will be fully operational and ready to serve the public by November 11 next year.
