Vilimalé Member of Parliament Mohamed Ismail has called for a formal review of the special privileges and security arrangements provided to former presidents, following their direct involvement in street protests and confrontations with law enforcement in the capital city.

MP Ismail, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group, made the remarks after former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom joined forces to lead demonstrations against the current administration. During these events, supporters from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the People’s National Front (PNF) reportedly breached police lines, leading to public criticism of the former leaders’ conduct.

In a video shared on social media platform X, the lawmaker emphasized that legal provisions granting former presidents state benefits and security are intended to ensure they can live with the honor and dignity befitting their former status as heads of state. However, he argued that their recent actions, which involve inciting public discord and disrupting social harmony, appear to contradict the spirit of these legal entitlements.

MP Ismail further noted that maintaining social stability is a collective responsibility. He expressed concern that figures who once occupied the nation’s highest office are now seen obstructing police duties and fostering division within the community, necessitating a re-evaluation of the state resources allocated to them.
