The Ministry of Education has announced that the demolition of the former Malé Prison facility, cleared to make way for a new multipurpose hall for Dharumavantha School, is scheduled for completion by the final quarter of this year.

Speaking to Public Service Media (PSM), the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, confirmed that the contract for the demolition has been awarded and physical work has commenced. Currently, efforts are focused on vacating the site to facilitate the full teardown process.

Minister Shafeeu emphasized that the upcoming facility will be one of the most modern halls in Malé, designed to high standards to serve various academic and extracurricular purposes. He noted that while the new Dharumavantha School building opened in 2023 with 41 classrooms, it was notably constructed without a dedicated hall or assembly space.

The Minister also critiqued the infrastructure planning of the previous administration, suggesting that a more efficient layout could have integrated both a hall and a play area within the existing school premises without requiring the demolition of adjacent structures.
