The Malé City Council, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), has officially commenced the data collection phase of the “Urban Mobility Survey.” This initiative aims to modernize the capital’s transportation network and transform Malé into a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

The comprehensive study focuses on identifying current transportation challenges by analyzing vehicle ownership trends, preferred modes of travel, and existing systemic bottlenecks. According to the Malé City Council, the primary objective is to alleviate traffic congestion and establish a more efficient, accessible infrastructure for all residents.

To execute the survey, 20 personnel from the Council’s Community Engagement Unit have visited over 1,000 households across the Greater Malé Area, including Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé. In addition to door-to-door data gathering, the Council has launched an online platform to facilitate broader public participation in the research process.
