The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has revealed that the Malé City Council (MCC) owes an outstanding balance of MVR 116.4 million for waste disposal services rendered since 2024.

In a press statement, WAMCO noted that it has engaged in numerous discussions with the City Council over the past two years to resolve the payment issue and ensure the continuity of services. However, despite repeated requests for a formal payment schedule, the corporation stated that the council has failed to cooperate.

WAMCO emphasized that while it continues to provide essential waste management services to avoid public health risks, it has now declined to register additional council locations or provide new services until the debt is settled. The corporation highlighted that non-payment from major clients has led to significant financial difficulties, affecting its ability to meet critical obligations, including staff pension payments.

While Mayor Adam Azim has been active in municipal oversight, this latest financial disclosure from WAMCO underscores a growing fiscal challenge regarding the funding of municipal waste services in the capital.
