The Maldives Police Service has confirmed the death of a 45-year-old Maldivian man while in detention at the Male Custodial facility.
Authorities reported that the individual was discovered unresponsive in his cell on the afternoon of April 24, 2026. He was immediately transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival.
According to the police, the deceased was being held in custody pursuant to a court order issued to ensure his presence for a judicial hearing. Following standard protocols for custodial incidents, the matter has been shared with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The Maldives Police Service is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
