The Criminal Court of the Maldives has extended the detention of the primary suspect allegedly involved in the kidnapping and assault of a Bangladeshi national in Hulhumalé. MD Hossain, 30, identified as the suspected ringleader of the operation, has been ordered to remain in custody for an additional 30 days.

The incident, which took place in late March at an active construction site, resulted in the arrest of five individuals, all of whom are Bangladeshi nationals. According to court proceedings, Hossain faces multiple serious allegations including illegal detention, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, and assault. Despite the evidence presented, the suspect has denied the charges brought against him.

The victim was eventually located by the Maldives Police Service in Villimalé and was transported to a medical facility for treatment prior to being released. While Hossain’s remand has been extended for a month, the detention period for the other four suspects is scheduled to expire on the 25th of this month as the investigation remains ongoing.
