Major Indian airlines have issued a stark warning to the government, stating that escalating global jet fuel prices and mounting financial pressures could force a total suspension of operations. The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), representing major carriers such as IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, reported that the industry has reached a critical tipping point where operations are no longer sustainable.

In a formal appeal, the FIA has urged the Indian government to temporarily waive the 11% duty on jet fuel. Currently, fuel expenditures account for approximately 40% of the airlines’ total operating costs. According to an official communication sent to the Ministry of Civil Aviation on April 26, carriers may have no alternative but to cancel scheduled flights if tax burdens are not eased.

The financial strain follows a recent hike in jet fuel duties, with rates climbing to $0.16 per liter for domestic flights and $0.77 per liter for international routes. This domestic crisis is mirrored globally, as jet fuel prices reached a record $179 per barrel last week. The surge is attributed to heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has severely disrupted global oil and gas supplies.
