WAMCO to Take Over Addu Hazardous Waste and Chemical Storage Facility

The temporary hazardous waste and chemical storage facility in Addu City will be handed over to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

An agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and WAMCO for the transfer of the facility.

According to the Tourism Ministry, the handover to WAMCO will provide Addu City residents with an easier solution for hazardous waste disposal and strengthen waste management services. This move will also help advance the country’s waste management system to meet international standards.

The Ministry further stated that the facility will enable the disposal of dangerous chemicals such as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), marking significant progress in protecting public health and the environment.

The facility was established under the “Eliminating POPs through Sound Management of Chemicals” project, which is part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) initiative.
