Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom are scheduled to visit Thinadhoo City to participate in the diamond jubilee celebrations marking 60 years since the island’s resettlement. The Thinadhoo City Council confirmed that the two leaders have accepted invitations to attend the historic event.

According to the Thinadhoo City Council, invitations were extended to the sitting President of the Maldives as well as all former heads of state. To date, Nasheed and Yameen are the only former presidents to have confirmed their attendance. Mayor Saud Ali stated that the city’s residents are enthusiastically preparing a warm welcome for the visiting leaders.

The commemorative festivities are planned as a three-day event featuring a diverse range of activities. Highlights include a grand flag-hoisting ceremony, a float parade, and a tree-planting program. Furthermore, the council has organized cultural sports, a family evening, and a historical photo exhibition showcasing Thinadhoo’s past. A special awards ceremony will also be held to recognize individuals who have provided distinguished service to the community.

The anniversary marks a significant chapter in Maldivian history. In 1962, Thinadhoo was depopulated under orders from then-Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir following the Suvadive rebellion. The forced evacuation was characterized by severe hardship and loss of life. After remaining abandoned for four years, the island was officially resettled in 1966.
