Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih Welcomes Democrats’ Return to MDP

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has welcomed the decision by members of The Democrats, led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, to rejoin the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The decision was made during an informal meeting of The Democrats’ National Assembly held on Tuesday, where members passed a resolution to merge with the MDP. The resolution was proposed by Women Democrats’ leader Fathimath Hamda Mohamed at Nasheed’s request.

Hamda’s resolution was approved with 35 votes in favor out of the 44 members present, following extensive discussions among assembly members.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, Solih, who served as president for the past five years, called for maintaining true Islamic principles, upholding democratic values, and always prioritizing public interest.

“I welcome the decision of The Democrats’ members to rejoin [the MDP],” Solih stated in his post.
