Supreme Court Operations Transferred to Justice Abdullah Hameed Until New Chief Justice Appointment

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to transfer the Supreme Court’s operations to Justice Abdullah Hameed until a new Chief Justice is appointed, following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.

The decision was made during today’s JSC meeting, where it was determined that Chief Justice Muthasim will retire next Monday.

Muthasim completed his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom, in 1992, followed by a Master of Philosophy from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1994.

His professional career includes serving as the Director of the Legal Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2001. He then worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at the Maldives College of Higher Education from 2001 to 2005.

From 2005 to 2010, Muthasim worked as a partner at Clippa & Gallion Law Associates. He has also served as a member of the Human Rights Commission, Law Commission, and Foreign Investment Board.

Under the new constitution, then-President Mohamed Nasheed nominated Muthasim to the permanent bench of the Supreme Court. He served as a Supreme Court Justice from August 10, 2010, until the end of 2014.

Muthasim returned to the Supreme Court in 2019 when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated him for the position of Chief Justice. He took his oath of office on December 8 of that year.
