Bar Council Elects New Vice President and Executive Committee Members

The Bar Council of Maldives, which regulates and oversees legal practitioners in the country, has elected a new vice president and two members to its Executive Committee.

The election was held as the term of the current vice president and four committee members is set to expire on the 14th of next month.

An initial yes-no vote for the Bar Council membership was conducted on the 26th of last month. Following the announcement for Executive Committee positions, a second round of elections was held yesterday with five qualified candidates.

The online election, conducted through “Fahivotu” platform, saw 1,086 lawyers registering to vote.

Ibrahim Shameel won the position of Executive Committee Vice President, defeating Maasha Luthfee. Shameel secured 291 votes while Luthfee received 216 votes.

Abdullah Nahid and Ahmed Shafiu were elected as committee members, receiving 294 and 284 votes respectively.

The Bar Council is responsible for protecting the rights and privileges of legal practitioners in the Maldives, issuing practice licenses, and regulating all aspects of legal practice in the country.
