Former President Abdulla Yameen has called on the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to utilize their recent electoral success to hold the current administration accountable by bringing government-related issues before the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the courts.

Speaking at a gathering at the People’s National Front (PNF) office, Yameen stated that the MDP’s performance in the Local Council Elections reflects widespread public dissatisfaction with the current government’s actions. He noted that after he advised his supporters not to vote for the People’s National Congress (PNC), voters chose the MDP—the primary opposition party—rather than invalidating their ballots.

Yameen emphasized that the MDP now carries a significant responsibility to curb executive influence over independent institutions and the judiciary. He reminded the party that the public has empowered them specifically to address these systemic concerns and protect the integrity of the state.

Concluding his remarks, the former President asserted that holding power is not a prerequisite for public service. He warned that the MDP would forfeit its right to seek a mandate in the 2028 presidential election if they fail to resolve the nation’s current challenges during this term.
