Land Reclamation Commences for Vihahfaru Airport Project in N. Atoll

Vihahfaru, Noonu Atoll — Land reclamation for the development of a new airport on Vihahfaru island, Noonu Atoll, officially commenced today, marking a significant step in the island nation’s infrastructure development programme.

The practical work began at a special ceremony held at midday, attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed jointly inaugurated the reclamation efforts.

Project Timeline and Presidential Commitments

The decision to develop an airport in Vihahfaru was formally announced by President Muizzu through a presidential decree in March 2024. This initiative follows a previous assurance made by the President to residents of Noonu Atoll in July 2023, where he pledged that practical work on the project would commence early this year.

Strategic Importance and Economic Impact

President Muizzu has consistently underscored the strategic importance of an additional airport in the region, particularly for the areas encompassing Hohlhudhoo, Velidhoo, and Fodhdhoo within Noonu Atoll. He noted its significance despite the existing airport on Maafaru, also in Noonu Atoll.

According to the President, the new airport is vital for supporting the atoll’s developed and expanding tourism sector, as well as for facilitating major economic diversification initiatives. He stated that the project is anticipated to yield long-term convenience and substantial benefits for the region’s economic landscape.
