Geneva, Switzerland – At the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, human rights activist Stephanie Branco Anjo underscored the pivotal role of grassroots initiatives in translating global human rights commitments into tangible improvements in people’s daily lives.
Speaking on Thursday, Anjo, representing the Sambhali Trust, asserted that the true measure of human rights progress extends beyond legislative frameworks and resolutions. Instead, it should be gauged by everyday enhancements within communities, emphasizing that consistent efforts at the local level—ensuring access to education, safety, dignity, and opportunity—are where human rights genuinely manifest.
Drawing from the impactful work of the Sambhali Trust, Anjo highlighted concrete advancements observed through community programs. Initiatives like Primary Education Centers and Sakhiyon Ki Baadi Centres have facilitated girls’ return to classrooms, significantly improving their access to education. Furthermore, empowerment centres have equipped numerous women with vital livelihood skills, fostering renewed confidence and economic independence.
Anjo also commended India’s people-centred development initiatives, which actively support critical areas such as education, nutrition, sanitation, housing, and digital inclusion. She noted that extensive programmes, including the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Poshan Aahar, have successfully reached millions across the country, making a substantial difference.
Reflecting on these achievements, Anjo stated that every educated girl, every woman achieving dignified earnings, and every child feeling protected serves as a testament to a positive trajectory towards inclusive development. She concluded by advocating for stronger global cooperation, urging nations to bolster civil society organisations, invest in community-based solutions, and safeguard human rights defenders. The ultimate success of human rights endeavors, she stressed, should be measured not merely by policy adoption but by the lived dignity and opportunities experienced by individuals in their everyday existence.
