MALÉ, Maldives – Three new judges have been appointed to the High Court and Criminal Court, taking their oaths of office during a ceremony held last night.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) confirmed the appointments, with Abdulla Raoof Ibrahim and Ismail Shafeeu designated for the High Court, and Ahmed Niyaz for the Criminal Court.

Oath Administration

The oath of office for the newly appointed judges was administered by Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Hameed. The ceremony took place at the Supreme Court.

High Court Appointees

Mr. Abdulla Raoof Ibrahim returns to the High Court, having previously served as a judge for 11 years. He resigned from his position in 2022. This resignation occurred amidst a controversy surrounding government-issued flats during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, leading to a decision for his removal.

Mr. Ismail Shafeeu transitions to the High Court from the Criminal Court, where he had been serving as a judge. Prior to his appointment to the Criminal Court in 2021, Mr. Shafeeu held the position of Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Criminal Court Appointee

Mr. Ahmed Niyaz has been appointed to the Criminal Court. Before this appointment, he served as the Chief Magistrate of the L. Kalaidhoo Magistrate Court. Mr. Niyaz brings 12 years of experience within the Maldivian judicial sector.
